VETERAN GANDHIANS
 PUNE AND DISTRICTS

 1.  Prof.Madhu Dandavate

 Prof. Madhu Dandavate was born on the 21st January 1924 at Ahmednagar.  He participate in the �Quit India� Movement in 1942 and has also taken an active part in the Socialist Movement since 1946.  In 1955, he led a batch of volunteers in Goa during the liberation movement against the Portuguese Colonial Ruile.  In 1969, he participated in the �Land Libertion Struggle�.

 
Prof. Dandavate became the General Secretary of the Socialist Party in 1972.  He was detained in the Bangalore Central Prison for 18 months after the declaration of the Emergency in India on the 28th June 1975.  After the coming of the Janata Party to power he has held many ministry positions in the government at the centre.

 
Prof. Dandavate is the author of various books among which are: Gandhiji�s Impact on Socialist Thinking, Marx and Gandhi, and Jayaprakash Narayan � the man and his ideas.

 2.  Bapusaheb Shende

 Bapusaheb Shende was born in Rahmatpur in Satara district. At the time when the freedom struggle was at its peak , inspired by Gandhi�s constructive programme for the upliftment of village poor and downtrodden, Shende joined the movement leaving his studies. He joined the Freedom movement in 1937 and did full time work for 5 years.  He participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement.  He was member of the AICC (All India Congress Committee) and in that capacity participated in the famous AICC meeting of August 1942 that passed the �Quit India� Resolution.  He was jailed for his activities.

 
Bapusahedb Shende has been chairman of the All India Beekeepers� Association for the past 50 years; singlehandedly campaigning and contributing to the development of apiculture.. In addition to Khadi and other work, he is instrumental in reviving and reopening the Handmade Paper Institute that later became a pioneering organization.

 
3.  Dr. Ms. Chitra Naik 

Dr. Chitra Naik was born on the 15th July 1918.  She took the Ph.D, degree in Education from Bombay University in 1949.  From 1957-61, she conducted programmes of rural education and development in 90 villanges around Pune. She has held posts in many education boards, commissions, and institutes She has travelled around the world attending conferences and lectures on the topic of primary education, non-formal adult education and women�s education.  She won the Padmashri in 1986 for her contribution to rural education. Because of her contribution to rural education in India, she won the Raja Roy Singh Award for outstanding contribution to �Education for All� in the AsiaPacific Region in 1992.

 Dr. Chitra Naik has published several articles , papers and books .  Among her best publications are Educational Innovation in India, and Developing Non-formal Primary Education: A rewarding Experience.

 4.  Damodar Balwant Kulkarni

 Shri Damodar Kulkarni was born on the 5th December 1913 at Jalgaon district.  He worked in the freedom movement at Amalner, Jalgaon district from 1941 to 1947 with Sane Guruji of whom he was a disciple.

 In free India he has devoted himself to creating awareness among the masses, especially the youth and giving lectures on the evils of the dowry system.  He has been president of the anti-dowry movement in Mumbai for 29 years.  He has been conferred many awards and other honours as well has been nominated as resource person for the Universities of Mumbai, Goa, Kolhapur and Pune.

 5.  Smt. Shobnatai Ranade

Smt. Shobtnatai Ranade was brought up in Palgarh. She passed BA economics with honours in 1947.   As a young mother, she participated in the freedom struggle by volunteering at Congress Party meetings or at times passing letters, messages or dabbas.  She was Chairman of the All Indian Women�s  Conference  from 1990 to 1995, and is currently Secretary of the Gandhi National Memorial Society at the Aga Khan Palace.  Most of her contribution towards social welfare has been for women�s literarcy and empowerment.  Shobnatai Ranade is well known in Pune for her Gandhian work and committment to women�s welfare.  She has been on the advisory boards of many government and non-government programmes and has herself initated numerous self-help and training programmes in Pune and in the districts.
